Africa Oceans Casino was conceived as part of London Club’s bid for a KwaZulu-Natal casino licence, combining gaming facilities with a large-scale entertainment and tourism destination in Westville, Durban. The proposal sought to distinguish itself from conventional casino developments through the integration of a major oceanarium attraction centred around a Great White Shark tank, creating a destination that extended beyond gambling into education, leisure and public entertainment.
The challenge was to develop a cohesive mixed-use environment capable of integrating diverse programmes including gaming, hospitality, exhibitions, restaurants and aquatic attractions within a unified architectural vision. The scale and complexity of the proposal required a master planning approach that balanced public movement, spectacle and environmental experience across the site.
The design organised the development around an artificial lake that became the central spatial and visual element of the precinct. Hotels, restaurants, convention and exhibition facilities were positioned around the water’s edge, while the oceanarium formed the symbolic and experiential heart of the development. The architecture emphasised movement, public gathering and layered entertainment experiences connected through a continuous landscaped environment.
The proposal presented a distinctive vision for integrated leisure development within Durban, combining tourism, recreation and commercial activity into a landmark destination intended to broaden the role and appeal of the contemporary casino environment.
